Learning in a Technology-enhanced Environment
The article
The Advantages and Disadvantages of Computer Technology in Second Language
Acquisition by Cheng-Chieh Lai and William Allen Kritsonis (2006) suits my
purposes in two ways. Not only does the article discuss the effects, benefits,
advantages, etc., of instructional technology on learner achievement, but it
also discusses some of the possible disadvantages involved when it comes to
second language instruction and the use of technology. It is important to
recognize both the advantages and disadvantages so we can get the maximum
effectiveness of technology to enhance second language learning. “Research
findings have proven that the use of computer technology has a positive
effect on the
achievement levels of
English as Second
Language (ESL) students, but it still has its limitations
and weaknesses, such as financial, isolated,
and knowledge required issues” (Lai & Kritsonis, 2006, abstract). Knowledge
required issues mean that both the student and the teacher must know how to use
computers, but such knowledge is now commonplace.
Some of the
advantages of using computer technology to enhance second language acquisition
include improving practices for students through experiential learning,
increase learning motivation, increase authentic materials for study, encourage
greater interaction between teachers and students and students and peers,
emphasize individual needs, regard independence from a single source of
information, and enlarge global understanding (Lai & Kritsonis, 2006).
Computer technology can provide lots of fun games and communicative activities,
reduce learning stress and anxiety, and provide repeated lessons as often as
necessary (Lai & Kritsonis, 2006). There are many more benefits to using
technology in the ESL classroom, too many to mention here.
Certainly, my interest is in
using the tools of technology in regard to classroom instruction; however, to
take that one step further and to be more specific, I am interested in using
technology as it applies to students of English as a Second Language (ESLs). I
have taught English as a second language for 19 years; however, I have never
had the opportunity nor the training and knowledge to use some of the current
technology tools in the classroom. I am excited about returning to the
classroom, online or otherwise, so that I might apply and experiment with the
many ways my students and I can utilize technology to our advantage in order to
enhance our understanding and knowledge.
